Coaching EquipmentIn addition to the Coaching Cards Practice Organizer, basketball coaches need the proper equipment to conduct an effective practice.
Court/Goals/Balls: One full court with two baskets is standard, but you can manage a quality practice with one goal and half of a court. Ideally each player would have a ball. Two players to one ball can be an effective ratio as well.
Necessities: Access to water is absolute, and having a first aid kit is a good idea. Consider carrying a cell phone in case of emergency, and make yourself aware of access to emergency facilities.
Vitals: Reversable jerseys, or scrimmage vests dramatically help players understand drills by visually separating the defense from the offense. A chalkboard or greaseboard to draw diagrams can also help your players learn. A whistle is also a very good tool for obvious reasons.
Extras: Cones or chairs are great for a variety of drills, especially ballhandling. Small wooden blocks are useful for defensive drills (see Defense #8). Jump ropes improve coordination, balance, foot speed, and endurance and they are excellent for use as a warm-up activity.
Suggestions: Try to eliminate destractions. Require punctuality. Try to keep background noise to a minimum. Define a word cue that gets your players’ full attention. As a coach, try to dress the part. Wear sneakers and clothes that allow you to be active on the practice floor.
