Coaching For FailureAs coaches we coach for success. We coach to win. (And this is a good thing). What I am want to suggest, however, is that if we coach our players for failure we will win more games. Here's what I mean: soccer is a game of chances, of players taking risks. Players will make mistakes, players will fail. We need to let our players know that is okay. We need to create an environment in which failure is okay. When we yell at players after each mistake, what happens? Players become afraid to take chances. They say to themselves, "if I make a mistake, I'll get yelled out." We should be encouraging our players to take chances, to make mistakes. "Go for it." "Nice try." "Unlucky." "You'll get it next time." And so on.
Coaching for failure is positive coaching. It builds self-esteem and confidence in your players. The most successful athletes are willing to take more risks than others, likewise, they will likely fail more than others. Successful athletes use failures as a motivation. Over time you'll develop impact players with a real enthusiasm for you and the game. What kind of player will you have if you constantly correct mistakes? If you constantly point out errors?
