Quick Overview: How to Use the Cards
Each Coaching Card is either a drill competition or scrimmage variation designed for specific individual or team skills. The front of each card provides the purpose, set-up and performance sequence for the activity. Diagrams supplement the information for help with the activity's set-up and sequence. Each card is also coded by these basic purposes: Teach, Develop, or Play. Though teaching is a constant in all levels of coaching, this coding further helps you organize your practice time.
Cards coded Teach are drills that are structured to teach very specific fundamental skills. These drills require the highest level of player attentiveness and coach involvement. Set a time limit (about 10 minutes) for Teach drills to keep practice moving. If there is work left to complete the drill, pick it up another day.
Cards coded Develop are drills that are higher-intensity strengtheners of individual or team skills. These drills carry fundamental emphases that demand some teaching involvement, but less so than for Teach drills.
Cards coded Play are either games or scrimmage variations which put to test a specific set of individual or team skills.
The attention to detail and the accountability of performance depends on the skill level and age of your players, but this set of Coaching Cards is designed with drills from which players of all levels can learn, improve and compete. The back of each card provides coaching tips, drill or scrimmage variations, or additional diagrams to further your effectiveness in administering the drill. Select cards appropriate to your teaching purpose as well as to the skill level of your team. As your team grows, so too will your use of the cards.
